Twitter’s first designer, Vítor Lourenço, leaves the company!

Twitter’s first designer, Vítor Lourenço, leaves the company after working there five years. He announced his departure today in his Twitter account, he also thanked Ev Williams for giving him the chance to work in the company. TechCrunch writes in their site that, “Some people will read too much into this, as a sign that things are shifting in a bad way at Twitter.” Anyway it’s very impressive to work 5 years in one of the largest social-network company in the world, after all that business is constantly changing and many people will be disappointed that they can’t make it.

Here is interview of Vítor Lourenço, which he gave to TechCrunch back in 2009:

You’re best known for having worked on one of the largest websites in the world, Twitter. Can you tell us about the steps you took to transform this already simple website to the more elegant, intuitive style so many people have come to know and love?

I worked with Twitter’s engineering team to simplify the application UI even more, by following some of John Maeda’s simplicity concepts: shrink, hide and embody. Therefore, the application didn’t loose any of it’s features, but they were better grouped and incorporated on the site, by introducing a unified sidebar with a vertical tabbed navigation. In terms of visual design, we refined the typography, button styles and fixed spacing and grid inconsistencies. On the front-end technical layer, we introduced AJAX for posting the updates and switching tabs, while improving the site’s performance by grouping images using CSS sprites.

BBM 7 beta allows you to make free voice call over Wi-Fi!

RIM announce earlier this week that they are launching BlackBerry 10 devices on January 30th, but company is also launching new version of it’s messenger app BBM. BBM 7 is not going to be only text messenger, it will add also free voice call option. You’ll be able to make free calls when connected to Wi-Fi, and call to all BlackBerry Messenger users. Users will see voice availability in their BBM contacts, and simply by pressing “dial” will request receiver to join the call. You can also jump back to messaging to send images and other content during voice call.

It’s still unclear that BBM 7 will be integrated into BlackBerry 10 devices, but it would be a shocker if it wouldn’t.
